Thai-Cambodian Border Tensions: Commander Urges Resolution Amidst Ammunition Assurance

Surin: Region 2 Commander Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang has called on the governments of Thailand and Cambodia to resolve ongoing issues at the Thai-Cambodian border, emphasizing the need for mutual understanding to prevent conflict. He confirmed that Thailand is prepared to maintain sovereignty with a full magazine of ammunition, expressing confidence that the situation will be resolved before his retirement in October.

According to Thai News Agency, Lt. Gen. Phadklang visited the border areas in Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani provinces to deliver royal gifts to soldiers stationed there. He urged the soldiers to prioritize their safety and health, especially during the rainy season, as emphasized by the Army Commander.

The 2nd Army Commander highlighted the importance of reaching a mutual understanding on the border situation, particularly concerning the construction of a fence around the Ta Muen Thom temple, which could potentially lead to conflict. He stressed the need for higher-level discussions to prevent misunderstandings and ensure peace.

Dialogue between Thai and Cambodian officials has been ongoing to address misunderstandings, especially regarding patrol routes and changes in military personnel. The improved situation is attributed to the coordination between battalion and company commanders from both sides, with Lt. Gen. Phadklang expressing readiness for a Regional Border Committee meeting once Cambodia signals its readiness.

Lt. Gen. Phadklang acknowledged Cambodia's nationalistic activities along the border as normal, noting that Thailand also promotes its historical sites along the Thai-Cambodian border. He reassured that these areas, including the castles in Si Sa Ket Province, are accessible to Thai citizens as they are recognized as Thai territory.

He expressed confidence in the selection of a capable successor for the Commander of Army Region 2 upon his retirement, emphasizing the military's commitment to following government policies, including crackdowns on call centers and scammers, which have significantly reduced related tensions in the border area.

Lt. Gen. Phadklang stated that the military remains focused on national security and is prepared to work with any government, provided policies are clear and beneficial to the country. He also noted improvements in the situation at Chong Bok since May 2025, crediting enhanced forces and checkpoint measures.

The resolution of border issues, including three temples and one disputed area submitted to the International Court of Justice, remains dependent on Cambodian leadership. Lt. Gen. Phadklang reiterated the importance of both governments working towards peace for the benefit of their citizens.

Addressing reports of ammunition shortages, Lt. Gen. Phadklang refuted claims of inadequate supplies, assuring that Thailand is well-equipped to protect its territory with sufficient ammunition reserves.
