Thai Army Accelerates Landmine Investigation Following Soldier Injuries

Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army is expediting its investigation into a landmine incident at the Chong Bok border, with expectations of having clear findings within the next 2-3 days. The Army is urgently examining the circumstances in which soldiers from the 6021st Infantry Company were injured by a landmine while on patrol in Ubon Ratchathani Province.

According to Thai News Agency, Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari disclosed details of the incident, noting that three soldiers were injured when they accidentally stepped on a landmine during their patrol. The soldiers have been hospitalized and are under close supervision at the Saraphithiprasong Camp Hospital in Ubon Ratchathani Province.

The investigation is focusing on collecting and analyzing evidence from the scene, with the assistance of explosives experts. The goal is to determine the type of landmine and establish whether it is a recent installation or a leftover from previous conflicts. The analysis is projected to be completed in the next few days.

Maj. Gen. Suvari also mentioned that further inquiries will be made to ascertain if Cambodia has recently deployed landmines in the area. Both Thailand and Cambodia have been signatories to the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use of anti-personnel mines, since 1999.
