Senator Nantana Pushes for Constitutional Court Petition Against 200 Senators

Bangkok: This week, an important legal maneuver is underway as Senator Nantana Nantvaropas leads efforts to draft a petition aimed at halting the duties of 200 senators, specifically in their role of approving members of independent organizations. The senator is working diligently to complete the petition and gather the necessary signatures for submission to the Constitutional Court.

According to Thai News Agency, Senator Nantana is spearheading this initiative to prevent the senators from performing duties related to approving office holders within independent bodies. She is committed to finalizing the petition this week and will collect signatures from a tenth or more of the independent senators to support this action. The petition will then be submitted to Mr. Mongkol Surachat, the President of the Senate. Senator Nantana highlighted the challenges in completing the petition due to its complex legal nature and the need to secure signatures from senators currently abroad.

Senator Nantana acknowledged the potential difficulty in persuading the Senate President to submit the petition to the Constitutional Court, a process she perceives as more challenging than collecting the necessary signatures. She noted a recent precedent where the Senate President swiftly submitted a petition regarding the removal of Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai and Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, following allegations of interference in the selection of senators. This situation underscores concerns about conflicts of interest, as senators under investigation could still approve positions in the Election Commission, akin to judges ruling on their own cases. Senator Nantana emphasized the need for the senators to refrain from these duties to maintain integrity.
