Bangkok: The Senate has formally requested the Thai government to open an extraordinary parliamentary session in response to heightened tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, where armed Cambodian forces have reportedly encroached on Thai territory.
According to Thai News Agency, the Senate issued a statement urging the Cabinet to address the border dispute by convening a joint parliamentary session to discuss the matter thoroughly.
Reporters have highlighted that the conflict at the border, which has been escalating since May 28, 2025, remains unresolved, with unclear causes and solutions. This has led to nationwide concern over potential impacts on Thailand's sovereignty and national interests, particularly after reports of Cambodian forces encroaching 200 meters into the Chong Bok area in Ubon Ratchathani Province.
In light of the constitutional duties outlined in Chapter 5, Article 52, Paragraph One, the Senate emphasizes the necessity for the state to protect Thailand's sovereignty and security. The Senate, representing the people alongside the House of Representatives, stresses its commitment to safeguarding national interests and maintaining territorial integrity.
The Senate advocates for peaceful negotiations based on mutual respect and sincerity between the two nations. It calls on the government to adhere to constitutional principles and consider the views of all parties. Furthermore, it requests the government to refrain from accepting the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice, as per the Cabinet Resolution of March 12, 2024, which mandates that any international contract including ICJ jurisdiction should be subject to reservations to protect national sovereignty.
The Senate is also urging the Prime Minister to submit a royal command to convene an extraordinary parliamentary session under Section 122 of the Constitution, allowing for a general debate as outlined in Section 165. This would enable the government to present a comprehensive account of the border situation and its solutions while providing a platform for parliamentary members to contribute their perspectives and proposals.
Given the urgency of the situation, the Senate insists that this session cannot be postponed until the regular parliamentary session scheduled for July 3, 2025. Delays could exacerbate the conflict and foster social unrest. The proposed session aims to unite national efforts to peacefully resolve the crisis while preserving Thailand's dignity.
While Section 123 of the Constitution allows parliamentary members to petition for a royal decree for an extraordinary session, the Senate believes proactive action by the Prime Minister and Cabinet would demonstrate leadership and accountability. It would also signal to the public the government's commitment to addressing the issue transparently and responsibly.
The Senate extends its support to military, police, and administrative officials stationed in disputed areas, acknowledging their dedication to maintaining national security. It also encourages Thai citizens along the border to remain resilient, with confidence that all parties involved will act to uphold the nation's sovereignty and interests.
