Senate Armed Forces Committee Chairman Urges Caution in Trusting Cambodia

Bangkok: The chairman of the Senate Armed Forces Committee has cautioned against trusting Cambodia, despite recent developments. General Sawat, Chairman of the Senate Armed Forces Committee, advised against complacency after Cambodian President Hun Sen livestreamed the withdrawal of heavy weapons. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to ensure Cambodia has fully complied with an agreement before considering the release of 18 prisoners of war. General Sawat assured that Thailand will not be at a disadvantage and expressed confidence in the local military's ability to control the situation.

According to Thai News Agency, General Sawat Tasana, who also serves as the chairman of the Senate's Committee on Military Affairs and State Security, addressed Hun Sen's broadcast of the transfer of Cambodian military equipment and heavy weapons. He noted that while the withdrawal, if genuine, would be beneficial for peace and order along the border, it is crucial not to trust Cambodia blindly. General Sawat called for an investigation to confirm the authenticity of the withdrawal, suggesting that it could have been staged for news purposes.

Discussing the potential release of the 18 prisoners of war, General Sawat stated that Cambodia must fully comply with the agreement and follow due process before Thailand can agree to their release. He stressed that compliance must be sincere and genuine. The general reiterated the importance of verifying news reports to gauge Cambodia's adherence to the agreement, expressing confidence that Thai soldiers will maintain their strategic advantage.
