Samsen Police Station Demolition and Road Resurfacing to Conclude in Two Weeks

Bangkok: Demolition of the Samsen Police Station building has been expedited, and road surfaces have been adjusted with completion anticipated in 14 days.

According to Thai News Agency, the accelerated efforts also include a proposal for private agencies to investigate the cause of a giant sinkhole and disclose findings to the public.

Prof. Dr. Amorn Pimanmas, President of the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand, inspected the ongoing demolition of the new Samsen Police Station building, which was compromised by the Samsen Road collapse near Vajira Hospital. He confirmed that the demolition is proceeding safely and is less challenging than dismantling older structures. He provided several recommendations for the demolition: ensuring a clear and safe demolition plan, involving a licensed engineer to oversee the process, considering the surrounding environment and controlling vibrations, and having the MRTA inspect and repair tunnel damages, especially leaks and soil removal.

Concerns have been raised about the subway tunnel's condition, signaling potential future risks if underground conditions remain unsafe. To facilitate safe traffic reopening, tests such as using heavy trucks to measure vibration strength should be conducted continuously. Rapid repairs of the subway tunnel are crucial to ensure its integrity before reopening for traffic. Reinforcing soil layers should be implemented to prevent further collapses and ensure public safety.

The cause of the subsidence is under investigation by the Ministry of Transport's committee. It is advised that private sector participation be included in the investigation, with findings made public.

Furthermore, a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, October 22nd, by the House of Representatives' Special Committee will summon contractors involved in various projects, including the electric train project and road repair, for information gathering.

Mr. Siriroj Siripalakritch, Deputy Managing Director of Piyamit Group Co., Ltd., the demolition contractor for the Samsen Police Station building, reported no current obstacles in the demolition process. Despite heavy rain, there have been no further soil subsidence issues, and he expects the demolition to be completed within the projected 14 days.
