Sagaing Fault Triggers 5.4 Magnitude Earthquake Off Myanmar Coast, Bangkok Infrastructure Unaffected

Bangkok: A 5.4 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Myanmar was attributed to the horizontal movement of the Sagaing Fault, as reported by the Department of Mineral Resources. Despite the tremors being felt in Bangkok, particularly in high-rise buildings, experts assured that the city's infrastructure remains unaffected.

According to Thai News Agency, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers at 9:58 a.m. Thailand time, approximately 500 kilometers from Bangkok. The Sagaing Fault, a right-lateral strike-slip fault, is known for its historical seismic activity, including a 7.3 magnitude quake in 1930 and a significant 8.2 magnitude event on March 28, 2025. This fault line moves at an average rate of 2 centimeters per year and has been responsible for several major earthquakes over the years.

The tremors were classified as Level 3 on the Mercalli scale, indicating mild shaking that was felt mainly in high-rise buildings in Bangkok. However, the Geological Monitoring Network in Tak and Mae Hong Son provinces reported no sensation of the tremors. The Department of Mineral Resources is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with local agencies to maintain public confidence.

The Structural Engineers Association of Thailand (STI) emphasized that the earthquake, though it caused swaying in several high-rise buildings, posed no risk to the structural integrity of buildings in the city. They urged residents not to panic and to rely on reliable government sources for updates.

Prof. Dr. Amorn Pimanmas, President of the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand, highlighted the role of Bangkok's soft soil in amplifying seismic waves, which can cause noticeable swaying in tall buildings. Despite this, he reassured that the tremors are not severe enough to impact building structures, though some architectural elements like brick walls and light fixtures might experience mild vibrations.

Residents are advised to stay informed through reliable sources and contact the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand for any concerns regarding building structures.
