Saeng Assures Smooth Electoral Process Amid Political Changes

Bangkok: Saeng, addressing concerns about potential election issues, promised a seamless electoral process and announced steps to draft regulations for a referendum on election day. He called for cooperation from all stakeholders, emphasizing that focusing solely on winning would not resolve underlying problems. Saeng confirmed that elections would be held in 2026, projecting it as a year rich in democratic activity due to rapid political transformations. He also addressed the Senate collusion case, highlighting that delaying justice is unjust.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sawaeng Boonmee, Secretary-General of the Election Commission (EC), presided over the inauguration of a knowledge exchange event on election management and referendums at the EC Office. During the event, he noted that while he did not anticipate early elections for subdistrict administrative organizations, Bangkok, and Pattaya City, the fast-paced political changes indicate that both elections and a referendum will occur in 2026. He described the year as emblematic of democracy, empowering citizens to exercise their sovereignty through the electoral process.

Amidst questions surrounding the senator collusion case, the EC's ongoing efforts have been scrutinized. The public's demand for justice highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach that respects procedures, time, facts, and practice. The EC Office is committed to ensuring fairness, with the Senate case under review by the Secretary-General for another few days before it progresses to the Subcommittee for adjudication.

The Secretary-General's responsibilities include verifying the accuracy of the case file before moving forward. Should any investigation gaps exist, further inquiries will be conducted to guarantee fair treatment for all parties involved. The current case of senator collusion is set to expire on September 16th, leaving the Subcommittee with a 90-day period for adjudication, after which the Election Commission will assume control.

As preparations for the 2026 elections and potential referendum continue, confidence remains high that the process will proceed as promised by political parties. The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) is readying regulations to synchronize the referendum with the election day, pending enforcement. This development marks a first for Thailand, with the Prime Minister holding the power to call a referendum.

The EC is committed to ensuring elections are meaningful, allowing citizens to express their preferences for representatives in both legislative and executive roles. The integrity and acceptance of elections are crucial for political stability and the smooth functioning of the country. Challenges such as early voting congestion and documentation issues are being addressed to avoid repetition, and strategies are in place to enhance efficiency if the referendum coincides with the election.

Mr. Sa-nguan, expressing his commitment to democratic principles, urged everyone to recognize the importance of cooperation in resolving national issues through elections. He emphasized the role of elections as a competitive process to achieve the best and most acceptable outcomes, aligning with the democratic system with the King as Head of State.
