Record Number of Tourists Crowd Doi Inthanon Amid Cold Weather Surge

CHIANG MAI: A record-breaking influx of 18,722 tourists visited Doi Inthanon, Chiang Mai Province, as cold weather and an extended New Year holiday drew crowds to northern Thailand's popular mountainous destination, resulting in significant traffic congestion.

According to Thai News Agency, the surge of visitors to Doi Inthanon, particularly around the Kiew Mae Pan viewpoint, coincided with temperatures dropping to 9 degrees Celsius. The influx included 16,663 Thai nationals and 2,059 foreign tourists, alongside 4,121 vehicles, surpassing previous records for both visitor and vehicle numbers. The increased tourism activity led to fully occupied parking lots, forcing many to park along the roadside, contributing to long lines of slow-moving traffic.

Authorities have issued safety advisories due to the challenging driving conditions on the steep and winding roads leading to the mountain's summit. Officials emphasize the need for road-ready vehicles and experienced drivers to navigate the terrain safely. Tourists are also encouraged to maintain environmental cleanliness by removing their waste, including food bags and water bottles, to protect the area's natural beauty.
