Purple Line Electric Train Project Advances with Tunnel Drilling Under Chao Phraya River

Bangkok: The Purple Line electric train project is making significant strides as construction progresses ahead of schedule. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, announced that the tunnel boring under the Chao Phraya River has commenced for the Tao Poon-Rat Burana (Kanchanaphisek Ring Road) section, marking a critical milestone in the project's development.

According to Thai News Agency, the tunnel boring machine has begun operations at the Phan Fa-Saphan Phut section, marking Thailand's second tunnel under the river. The civil works have reached 59.49% completion, which is 51.52% ahead of the target. The tunnel boring is scheduled for completion by May 2026, with the Tao Poon-National Library section opening in 2028, and the entire line set for completion by 2030.

The Purple Line project spans 23.63 kilometers and includes 17 stations, comprising 14.29 kilometers of underground track with 10 stations and 9.34 kilometers of elevated track with 7 stations. The route begins at Tao Poon Station, which connects with the MRT Chalong Ratchadham and MRT Chaloem Ratchamongkhon lines.

Mr. Suriya emphasized the importance of adhering to construction safety measures and managing traffic effectively to minimize disruptions. The Department of Rail Transport, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand, and contractors are tasked with implementing measures to prevent flooding and reduce environmental impacts during construction.

The Ministry of Transport aims to develop a comprehensive public transport system, encouraging reduced use of personal vehicles in Bangkok and improving public transport efficiency. The project includes a fare measure, capping the maximum fare at 20 baht. The public can register for this through the "Thang Rath" app from August 25, 2025. The fare cap will take effect on October 1, 2025, and is expected to increase daily ridership from 150,000 to over 250,000.
