Protesters Gather at Victory Monument Amid Tight Security and Heavy Traffic

Bangkok: The Ruam Palang Phaendin group established their presence at Victory Monument, preparing for the evening's highlight when leaders will deliver speeches under stringent security measures.

According to Thai News Agency, the United Power of the Land group began their activities at 10:00 a.m. with a religious ceremony to honor military heroes. The event included speeches from protesters throughout the day, culminating in the evening with a statement reading after the national anthem at 6:00 p.m. Key figures such as Mr. Sonthi Limthongkul and Mr. Jatuporn Prompan are scheduled to speak, with the event concluding by 9:00 p.m.

Mr. Pichit Chaiyamongkol of the People's Democratic Reform Committee led a group from Chamai Maruchet Bridge to join the protest at Victory Monument. He highlighted the rally's aim to protect national sovereignty and clarified that it was financially supported by public donations rather than any organization. He also addressed reports of checkpoints being established to prevent participation, emphasizing the peaceful nature of the rally.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Thiradej Thamsuthee of the Metropolitan Police Bureau and the BMA assessed the protest area, setting up five screening points. A machete and box cutter were confiscated from a rider not associated with the protest, leading to legal action. Security measures were strictly enforced, though a Gino vehicle was prepared but not deployed.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt oversaw the arrangements, ensuring the availability of mobile toilets, drinking water, emergency ambulances, and municipal officers. A command center was established to connect CCTV and drone feeds for monitoring. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit and K9 dogs conducted safety inspections.

Traffic near Victory Monument, particularly on routes like Soi Phahonyothin 2, faced heavy congestion, with signs advising against using Phahonyothin Road towards the monument. Despite the traffic, roads remained open. The stage setup faced Sanam Pao with projector screens and various facilities for attendees. Vendors sold items including Thai flags and T-shirts with patriotic messages.
