Prime Minister Orders Constant Monitoring of Water Situation Amid Heavy Rainfall

Bangkok: The Prime Minister has directed the Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situation to closely monitor the water situation following heavy rainfall in several regions, urging all units to remain on standby and ready to assist the population around the clock. The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) has issued warnings about the potential for flooding, flash floods, and landslides until May 30.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Government Spokesperson Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan disclosed that Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra is keeping a close watch on the situation. She has instructed the Flood, Storm, and Landslide Relief Operation Center (FLOC) to ensure the readiness of personnel, equipment, machinery, and a 24-hour public warning system.

The deputy government spokesperson mentioned that the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) meeting indicated a 25% increase in accumulated rainfall in 2025 compared to the average. Consequently, the public is advised to remain vigilant against flooding, flash floods, mudslides, and landslides from May 26-30.

Residents in the following areas are urged to stay alert:

- North: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Tak, Phetchabun, Uttaradit

- Northeast: Bueng Kan, Kalasin, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Surin, Sisaket, Ubon Ratchathani

- West: Kanchanaburi

- East: Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chanthaburi, Trat

- South: Chumphon, Ranong, Phang Nga

Additionally, individuals in low-lying areas are cautioned about high tides and saltwater intrusion from May 27 to June 1. Potentially affected areas include regions along the Chao Phraya River, Tha Chin River, and Mae Klong River, as well as communities outside temporary embankments and areas lacking permanent flood barriers.

Surveillance is ongoing for saltwater intrusion that might impact water quality for consumption and agriculture in Samut Prakan, Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom, and Samut Songkhram.

In Mae Sai, Chiang Rai Province, the flood situation has shown signs of improvement. However, authorities remain vigilant against possible repeat rainfall and water inflow from neighboring countries. The water level at Mae Sai Friendship Bridge 1 is approximately 20 centimeters below the bank. Coordination with the Forward Command Center in Chiang Rai ensures 24-hour readiness to assist residents.

For assistance, citizens can contact hotline 1784 and stay informed through updates from relevant government agencies.

The NESDB meeting also brought attention to concerns over arsenic levels in the Kok and Sai rivers. The Ministry of Public Health's water sample tests from 13 locations across 7 districts showed arsenic levels within acceptable standards. Residents are advised to remain cautious and take necessary precautions.

"The government expresses its concern for all citizens potentially affected by the flood situation. We assure that all agencies are prepared to offer support and assistance. Please continue to follow the news and cooperate with officials to ensure everyone's safety," stated Ms. Sasikarn.
