Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul Meets Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith to Strengthen Diplomatic Ties


Vientiane: The Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, recently paid a courtesy call on the President of the Lao PDR, Thongloun Sisoulith, as part of efforts to reinforce the longstanding relationship between the two neighboring countries and to commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations.



According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat disclosed that the Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the enduring friendship between Thailand and Laos, which are not only close neighbors but also significant strategic partners. The upcoming 75th anniversary of Thai-Laos diplomatic relations in 2025 was highlighted as a testament to this long-standing partnership.



During the meeting, the Prime Minister conveyed his gratitude to President Thongloun for his role as a steadfast friend of Thailand. He reiterated his commitment to furthering cooperation between the two nations to yield tangible benefits for their citizens.



President Thongloun, in turn, expressed his pleasure at meeting the Prime Minister and extended a warm welcome. He highlighted the importance of the close ties between Laos and Thailand, recognizing the Thai monarchy’s role in fortifying these relations as a symbol of stability and friendship.



The discussions included a focus on security cooperation, with both leaders agreeing to collaborate on cross-border issues impacting citizens’ safety and quality of life. This includes tackling drug addiction, online fraud, transboundary smog, and water management.



Prime Minister Anutin emphasized his willingness to support funding to bolster the capabilities of Lao officials in combating drug smuggling and precursor substances. He also underscored the importance of enhancing transportation and logistics connectivity, aiming to transform Laos from a land-locked to a land-linked nation to boost economic capacity and facilitate travel.



Key Thai-Lao cooperation projects were also discussed, such as the improvement of the Lao PDR’s Route 12 and the new Mekong River railway bridge project in Nong Khai Province, which are expected to enhance tourism and economic activities between the two countries.



The President praised the development cooperation between Thailand and Laos, particularly the royal initiatives that have significantly contributed to improving the quality of life in Laos and sustainable human resource development. The Prime Minister agreed and highlighted the potential for clean energy cooperation, aiming to attract investment in green industries in both nations.
