PM Paethongtarn Asserts Thailand’s Dignity Amid Tensions with Cambodia

Bangkok: Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra has declared that Thailand is a nation of dignity and strength, and will not tolerate intimidation or harassment from any party. She criticized Cambodia for engaging in information warfare beyond the agreed framework, emphasizing that nations failing to adhere to international rules risk global disapproval. In response, she appointed General Nattapol Nakphanit, known as "Big Lek," as head of a special task force to monitor the situation, reiterating Thailand's non-acceptance of the International Court of Justice's jurisdiction due to respect for bilateral frameworks.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Paethongtarn made these remarks following a security meeting at her residence in Phitsanulok, focusing on the Thai-Cambodian border situation. The meeting reviewed the outcomes of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) discussion held on June 14-15, which, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was deemed successful with the acceptance of the established framework.

Further discussions at the meeting involved multiple levels, from on-ground operations to the Prime Minister's office, emphasizing continuous communication. A special committee, Team Thailand, was established to oversee the situation, with General Nattapol Nakphanit appointed to lead efforts in news monitoring and strategic actions.

Regarding the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Thailand maintains its stance of non-acceptance of its jurisdiction. The country has initiated a working team to strategize on national defense and legal analysis, ensuring comprehensive information is available for all actions taken.

In response to Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen's remarks about potentially closing Phnom Dan checkpoints, Prime Minister Paethongtarn clarified that Thailand merely adjusted the checkpoints' operational times due to previous clashes. She highlighted ongoing dialogues with Cambodian officials, including a meeting held on May 28 with Cambodian Prime Minister General Hun Manet, focusing on maintaining peace and safeguarding citizens' lives.

Prime Minister Paethongtarn also addressed concerns about Cambodia's information warfare tactics, stating that such communications are detrimental to both nations. She emphasized the importance of adhering to formal bilateral frameworks, noting that unofficial communications often create unnecessary chaos.

To further transparency, Thailand has documented all discussions, including JBC meetings, ensuring global awareness of their diplomatic efforts. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also engaged with ambassadors in Thailand to explain the ongoing situation and measures taken.

Prime Minister Paethongtarn reaffirmed her commitment to respecting international negotiations and upholding bilateral agreements, reiterating Thailand's intention to maintain sovereignty without inciting conflict. She concluded her remarks by emphasizing Thailand's unity and strength, asserting that the country will not allow any form of bullying or threats to undermine its dignity.
