PM Calls for Urgent Meeting After Discovering Forest Encroachment on Thai-Cambodian Border Area

Surin: The Prime Minister called the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Army Chief of Staff to an urgent meeting after visiting Surin Province. The Commander of Army Region 2 reported finding that encroachment on protected forest areas and national parks was a problem. Inspection of areas along the border is urgently needed. Additional inspection routes are being added to facilitate officials.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister, posted a message on social media after calling an urgent meeting this morning with Mr. Jatuporn Buruspat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Gen. Thongchai Rodyoi, Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Army, and the heads of the 5 national parks along the border, stating that yesterday (June 11), when my team and I went to Surin Province, the Commander of the 2nd Army reported another important matter, which is the encroachment on the reserved forest area and national park area. Currently, there is a problem in entering the area to inspect because it is an area along the border and there is no route, making the operation difficult and slow.

Today, I would like to request an urgent meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the heads of the five national parks along the border, and the Army Chief of Staff to discuss the matter.

Plans that need to be urgently implemented include increasing the number of routes for patrolling the park area, preventing deforestation, and maintaining natural resources in the border area in good condition, sufficient for facilitating and reducing travel time for officials, including plans to urgently develop stable communication and electricity systems to facilitate coordination between officials working in the area.

There are many things that need to be urgently managed in border operations in order to prepare and facilitate the officers to operate efficiently and reduce obstacles as much as possible. The government is ready to support all of this.
