Monks and laypeople fled in panic after the ceiling of the sermon hall at Wat Pa Na Don collapsed while the monks were receiving an invitation. The cause was pigeons living under the roof, pecking at each other and defecating every day, weighing more than 1 ton, and the ceiling could not support the weight. The ceiling of the prayer hall collapsed while the monks of Wat Pa Na Don, Nong Na Kham Subdistrict, Mueang District, Udon Thani Province, were receiving an invitation from relatives and laypeople. The monks and laypeople ran away in chaos. After the incident, the monks and villagers helped move the ceiling from the hall. Fortunately, no one was injured. Phra Maha Uthai Khamchalee, 62, the abbot and community leaders, inspected the area where the ceiling collapsed. During the incident, relatives and laypeople came to offer money for the Kathin ceremony. While they were reciting the words of offering, it turned out that pigeons flying under the roof of the sala started pecking at each other. Then the cei ling started to collapse. Starting from the center of the pavilion, moving towards where the monks were sitting, there was a loud bang. At that time, there were 4 laypeople sitting there. After the ceiling collapsed, one layperson suffered a small scrape on his forehead. As for the 5 monks, they were not injured. The cause was found to be that the ceiling was not fastened thick enough, coupled with a large amount of pigeon droppings, probably not less than 1,000 kilograms or 1 ton. Source: Thai News Agency
