BANGKOK: No conclusion has been reached yet regarding the submarine project, as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, emphasized the need for a detailed study before any decision is made. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham addressed the project status following discussions with Admiral Chirapol Wongwit, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy, and Admiral Cholathit Nawanukroh, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy. Mr. Phumtham clarified that the contract amendment stage has not been reached, and the matter is under review. He acknowledged that the project has been ongoing for some time, but stressed that he was not involved from the start and requires time to understand the issues thoroughly. He expressed the necessity to evaluate the project's benefits and potential problems, emphasizing the importance of explaining the situation to the public clearly. Addressing speculations about political influences on the project, Mr. Phumtham dismissed concer ns that the submarine initiative, originating during Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan's tenure as defense minister, might be hindered due to political differences with the current Pheu Thai government. He reiterated his focus on military benefits and public understanding, assuring that his decisions are not politically motivated. During discussions with the navy and as part of the ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting, Mr. Phumtham reviewed various aspects of the submarine project. He urged the public not to worry as he intends to handle the matter responsibly and will provide clear explanations once the study is complete.
