Phumtham Vejjayachai Bids Farewell to Defense Ministry, Signs Submarine Contract

Bangkok: "Phumtham" pays homage to the sacred objects of the Defense Ministry, bids farewell to his position, thanks for being a part of the military family, signs a submarine contract, while Gripen waits for a new Defense Minister, explains that there is no Minister yet, waiting for the right person, reveals that he will enter the Interior Ministry this Friday. Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, traveled to the Ministry of Defense at 9:00 a.m. to pay homage to the seven sacred objects of the ministry, including the Arak Devasathan and the statue of King Naresuan the Great, marking his farewell to the position of Minister of Defense.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham stated that his departure was in line with the situation, having received royal approval to be the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. However, he could not begin his duties immediately as he awaited the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for the following day. After the ceremony, a special cabinet meeting was expected, allowing him to resume his responsibilities. Reflecting on his 9-month tenure, Mr. Phumtham expressed his understanding of the issues and potential solutions, having collaborated with high-ranking commanders of the Ministry of Defense and armed forces. He noted significant progress in addressing welfare and morale issues for soldiers, emphasizing the army's crucial role in crisis response and public assistance.

Mr. Phumtham revealed that the submarine contract had been signed and submitted to the Cabinet, awaiting inclusion on the agenda for review by the Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs. He shared confidence in the success of planned initiatives, such as personnel adjustments and infrastructure development, crediting the understanding mindset of Defense Ministry leaders and their adaptability to technological advancements. Discussions on these matters had occurred during Defense Council meetings, and it was anticipated that the Defense Ministry would continue these efforts.

In discussions with General Nattapol Nakphanit, Deputy Minister of Defense, Mr. Phumtham emphasized the importance of continuing efforts, particularly regarding the Cambodian border issue, advocating for peaceful resolution and adherence to international legal processes. He also acknowledged that while the submarine contract was signed, the Gripen aircraft procurement project remained incomplete, necessitating the involvement of a new minister.

Addressing the vacancy in the Defense Minister position, Mr. Phumtham attributed it to appropriateness considerations and government mechanisms, emphasizing the need for a suitable candidate capable of effectively connecting with armed forces and fulfilling defense responsibilities.

When questioned about the potential appointment of a new Defense Minister within the next three months, Mr. Phumtham dismissed rumors, prioritizing the selection of the most qualified individual. He stressed the importance of honesty and accountability in public service and the necessity of proving oneself in the face of doubt.

Mr. Phumtham announced his entry into the Ministry of Interior scheduled for Friday, July 4th, where he would participate in traditional homage ceremonies and engage with senior executives. He outlined plans to align policy assignments with evolving situations, focusing on significant matters to ensure smooth operations. Additionally, he reiterated his ongoing commitment to security affairs alongside his responsibilities at the Ministry of Interior.
