Phumtham Sends Protest Letter to Cambodia Over Morale-Boosting Song at Ta Muen Thom Temple

Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, has expressed discomfort over the recent appearance of Cambodians singing a morale-boosting song and displaying symbols at the Ta Muen Thom Temple. In response, Phumtham has sent a protest letter, aiming to prevent the situation from escalating into a conflict.

According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham clarified that the Ta Muen Thom area, located in Phanom Dong Rak District, Surin Province, is recognized as being within Thailand, though the boundary remains somewhat ambiguous. Despite this, the area has been accessible to Cambodians and the public for regular visits and homage.

Phumtham emphasized the discomfort with the recent activities, noting that relevant military commanders have already lodged protests. With the Minister of Foreign Affairs currently in Beijing, Phumtham mentioned plans to coordinate via phone to address the issue diplomatically. He assured that there is no significant conflict, emphasizing the friendly relations at the national level, and that the situation was likely a misunderstanding by visitors.

When questioned about the involvement of a high-ranking Cambodian military officer's wife, Phumtham reiterated that the protest stance remains unchanged, regardless of the visitors' identities. He emphasized the importance of preventing potential conflicts and maintaining peace, stating that such symbolic actions should be avoided to ensure harmony between both nations.
