Phumtham Refutes Claims of Cambodia’s Refusal to Meet with RBC

Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Thailand, addressed recent reports concerning Cambodia's alleged withdrawal from the Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting. He clarified that there was no cancellation by Cambodia; instead, they were merely awaiting confirmation from their superiors to set a date for the meeting.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham emphasized that the information circulating about Cambodia's refusal to participate in the RBC meeting was inaccurate. He highlighted ongoing discussions with the RBC and stated that both countries have agreed to follow a particular path regarding border matters. Cambodia's request to consult their commanding officers before setting a meeting date was not a denial of participation.

Mr. Phumtham further explained that while the RBC meeting had yet to be scheduled, it was not postponed. The agreement on a date was pending further discussions with superiors. He reiterated the importance of adhering to legal and international standards and clarified that social media posts do not influence official proceedings.

In response to questions about the influence of social media on diplomatic communications, Mr. Phumtham noted that while leaders like Hun Sen and Hun Manet might post daily, these do not alter Thailand's legal stance or practices, which are based on international principles. He affirmed that Thailand consistently communicates its position clearly and legally through official channels.

Regarding the potential involvement of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in facilitating discussions with Cambodian leaders, Mr. Phumtham indicated uncertainty about such personal diplomatic engagements, suggesting that it would require direct communication with Thaksin himself.
