Bangkok: Phumtham Vejchai, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, chaired the 56th meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) between Thailand and Malaysia. The meeting aimed to enhance cooperation and express gratitude to Malaysia for supporting peace in Thailand's southern provinces. The discussions also addressed the challenges posed by policies under the new US President.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham highlighted that the meeting focused on cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia on various issues without mentioning dual nationality. External factors, particularly the impact of Donald Trump's presidency, were a significant topic of discussion. The policies of the US, especially regarding medical assistance cuts for immigrants, could affect shelters along the Thai-Myanmar border. Both Thailand and Malaysia emphasized their desire for regional peace and non-violence. ASEAN's neutral stance was reiterated, with discussions on conflict resolution grounded in peace and patience. The meeting also covered defense cooperation due to the shared border. Thailand raised concerns about Malaysia's border closure, which impacts cross-border students. Malaysia agreed to reconsider the issue.
