Phumtham Awaits Opposition Leader’s Move on MOU 44 Debate.


Bangkok: Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, has stated that the initiative to open a parliamentary debate on the MOU 44 issue rests with the opposition leader. Mr. Phumtham emphasized that the government is not involved in the process, as it is the responsibility of the opposition leader to submit the matter for parliamentary consideration under Section 155.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham addressed the situation regarding Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, the leader of the opposition, who is preparing to request the opening of the parliament to discuss MOU 44. He noted that the matter awaits submission and adherence to parliamentary procedures, with the government maintaining a non-involvement stance. Despite widespread discussions about MOU 44, no action has yet been taken, and even the Joint Technical Committee (JTC) has not been established.

Mr. Phumtham mentioned that the government’s legal department is currently studying the issue, urging stakeholders to a
void speculation until concrete steps are taken. He highlighted that, at present, details such as the committee’s composition and leadership have not been determined, and thus, there is nothing substantial to report. When asked about the timeline for the committee’s establishment, Mr. Phumtham clarified that he is not responsible for setting it up.
