Phumtham Assures Preparedness Amidst Tensions Between Thailand and Cambodia

Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Thailand, has confirmed that thorough measures are in place to handle any potential clashes that may arise between Thailand and Cambodia. He has urged the media to refrain from disseminating inaccurate information that might escalate the situation further. Phumtham emphasized that the issue should not be blown out of proportion and maintained that Thailand is neither being humble nor breaking its commitments.

According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham spoke about the initial steps taken to address the situation, clarifying that while all necessary measures have been arranged, specific details would be shared later in a press release from the National Security Council (NSC). The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that any decisions regarding border closure would depend on the evolving situation, with all options thoroughly prepared.

When questioned about the possibility of closing borders or prohibiting crossings for casino visits in neighboring countries, Phumtham affirmed that measures are already in place but were not yet ripe for discussion. He noted that discussions with various agencies have already taken place, and a mechanism is agreed upon to address potential situations as they arise.

Regarding troop deployment, Phumtham mentioned that discussions with the Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense suggested adjusting troop levels to those of 2024. He indicated that current troop deployments pose no issues and that the situation should be resolved using bilateral legal and international relations mechanisms.

A special committee has been established to oversee these matters, and Phumtham assured that all steps will be coordinated with the Ministry of Defense, the Army, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also addressed concerns about the Army Commander not attending a recent meeting, confirming that the Army Chief of Staff represented the Army without any repercussions.

Phumtham reiterated the government's commitment to peaceful solutions, separating it from public calls for sovereignty protection. He highlighted the longstanding bilateral mechanism or JBC, effective in addressing issues such as call center gangs, drug trafficking, and human trafficking, while also fostering economic cooperation. Emphasizing peaceful means, Phumtham assured that the military remains vigilant in safeguarding the nation's sovereignty.

In response to inquiries about communication shortcuts with Cambodia, Phumtham insisted that national sovereignty issues must be handled by relevant government agencies. Informal discussions with the Cambodian Minister of Defense have taken place, and all proposed mechanisms are being utilized. He cautioned against distorted news reporting, which could provoke negative reactions.

Phumtham urged all parties to collaborate, warning against unnecessary escalation that could damage relations. He dismissed concerns about Cambodia not participating in JBC meetings, citing recent positive discussions. On the army's commitment to protecting sovereignty, he emphasized it as a fundamental duty without complications.

Regarding potential coups and social media conflicts, Phumtham dismissed coup concerns, attributing it to good communication. He advocated for mutual efforts to prevent war and discouraged inflammatory rhetoric. Addressing perceptions of humility in Thailand's stance, Phumtham refuted claims of lacking dignity, focusing instead on the broader national issue at hand.

Phumtham refrained from commenting on remarks about the relationship between Thaksin Shinawatra and General Hun Sen, concluding the discussion on a note of diplomatic optimism.
