Phumtham Affirms Appropriateness of Artillery Training Amid Concerns

Bangkok: "Phumtham" asserts that the 34th Infantry Division's artillery practice was conducted in a suitable area, with coordination from relevant agencies and pre-established firebreaks. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, acknowledged the potential need to review the training protocols to mitigate the impacts of dust, smoke, and forest fires.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham addressed concerns following reports of a forest fire caused by the artillery exercises, which affected over 500 rai of land. He emphasized that the training site is not a large forest but rather an undeveloped area deemed appropriate for such activities. Coordination with relevant agencies was ensured, and a firebreak was established beforehand. Although the fire caused significant damage, it has been extinguished, with the 3rd Army remaining vigilant to manage any further incidents promptly.

Mr. Phumtham commented on the possibility of reviewing training sessions during the summer, a period prone to forest fires and smoke. He noted that while such incidents do not occur regularly, a review might be warranted to ensure careful execution. The training procedures, part of a standard cycle for soldiers, include preventive measures and firebreaks. He stressed that these occurrences, while unfortunate, should not pose a significant problem.

Addressing social media speculation about the timing of military exercises, Mr. Phumtham remarked on the complexity of determining the appropriateness of both the training and the ensuing criticisms. He acknowledged the variety of perspectives on the matter, implying that the discussions surrounding the timing are multifaceted.
