Phumtham Addresses Concerns Over Thai-Cambodian Border Dispute

Bangkok: In response to recent developments regarding the Thai-Cambodian border conflict, Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Thailand, has clarified the government’s approach to resolving the issue. He emphasized that Thailand does not recognize the authority of the International Court of Justice in this matter and detailed the nation’s stance against potential encroachment by Cambodia.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham addressed concerns about a reported 200-meter encroachment by Cambodian forces, stressing that the government is utilizing three mechanisms to resolve the dispute while maintaining Thailand’s territorial integrity. The government has released a statement reflecting a consensus among the National Security Council, the Royal Thai Army, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This statement underscores Thailand’s commitment to upholding its sovereignty and resolving the conflict without resorting to violence.

Mr. Phumtham further explained the government’s strategy to limit the scope of the conflict, thereby avoiding escalation to the International Court of Justice. He reassured the public that Thailand remains committed to the MOU 43, which facilitates joint conclusions on disputed points. The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the upcoming Joint Boundary Commission meeting scheduled for June 2025 in Phnom Penh as a key step in addressing the issue.

The government’s approach includes comprehensive preparation for potential military engagement, if necessary, while prioritizing peaceful negotiations. Mr. Phumtham called for public support and urged against incitement or unwarranted criticism, emphasizing the need for strategic solutions over emotional responses.

Regarding reports of Cambodian encroachment, Mr. Phumtham stated that aerial evidence would be required to clarify the situation. He mentioned that both nations have declared their territorial claims, and any violations would be addressed through the mechanisms outlined in MOU 43.

Mr. Phumtham also dismissed rumors of a request from Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Tea Say Ha to close the border, labeling such claims as nonsense. He confirmed that communication with Cambodian officials is ongoing, focusing on utilizing the JBC mechanism to prevent violence and facilitate dialogue.

As the situation develops, Mr. Phumtham assured that the government, military, and relevant authorities are in constant communication to ensure Thailand’s sovereignty is protected. He reiterated the importance of patience and strategic assessment in handling the border dispute, indicating that any decisions regarding border closure would be based on daily evaluations of the situation.
