Phradon Announces Timeline for Constitutional Amendments

Bangkok: "Phradon" has unveiled a timeline for amending the constitution, indicating that the committee level will be concluded during the closing session. The voting on agenda items 2-3 in the 2/68 session is expected to be timely.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Paradorn Prisananantakul, a Member of Parliament for Ang Thong and Minister to the Prime Minister's Office, addressed the timeline for constitutional amendments following a proposal to convene a special parliamentary session to complete the amendment process by November. He stated that after Parliament accepted the draft amendment in principle during the first reading on October 14-15, a committee would be established. The Senate confirmed its unresolved objections and readiness to participate in the amendment process. All parties agreed to proceed with the amendment. While the content of the three drafts differs, all parties agree on the final outcome. Therefore, he urged the Constitutional Court's ruling to proceed with the amendment. The committee will thoroughly consider any issues that may conflict with the court's ruling. However, if it is found to be inconsistent, the committee should refrain from pursuing such a path, as this could lead to the failure of the constitu tional amendment.

Mr. Paradorn also believes that the committee's deliberations will not take long and expects to complete them before the House opens its session on December 12th. He confirmed that the second and third agenda items will be considered and completed by the second regular session of 2025, or the next session.

Regarding the timeline for holding the referendum, along with the general election, Mr. Paradorn explained that the referendum bill is currently awaiting royal endorsement, with a timeline of 60-120 days remaining. However, the details will need to be considered by the committee again, as the referendum itself is also crucial.
