Bangkok: Pheu Thai Party calls on the Bhumjaithai Party government to act swiftly in deciding on the continuation of the 20 baht flat-rate electric train fare scheme before its October 1st termination. The Pheu Thai Party emphasizes the importance of a resolution in the first cabinet meeting to ensure the project's future.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chanin Rungthanakiat, deputy spokesperson and executive member of the Pheu Thai Party, highlighted the urgency surrounding the 20-baht flat-rate project, which has been in effect since October 15, 2023. The scheme faces potential termination or a fare increase to a maximum of 42 baht if the Bhumjaithai Party government does not extend it. Pheu Thai hopes the new administration will continue the efforts started by the Pheu Thai government, focusing on public benefit rather than political differences.
Mr. Chanin stressed the need for a prompt decision at the upcoming Cabinet meeting to prevent the scheme's termination on October 1, 2025. He noted that the project has benefited over 100,000 urban residents without imposing a significant burden on the national budget.
Additionally, Mr. Chanin provided insights into electric train usage. Statistics from September 17th show the Purple Line's average weekday ridership at 81,000-88,000 and the Red Line at 41,000-45,000. As ridership has grown, government compensation payments have decreased. Former Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit reported on February 15th that increased ridership had boosted profits for the electric train lines by over 12%. Although the fare per passenger has decreased, higher ridership means less or potentially no compensation from the government if numbers continue to rise.
Mr. Chanin reiterated that should the current government decide against continuing the 20 baht flat-rate scheme, the Pheu Thai Party is determined to advocate for its completion, aiming to lower citizens' living costs and improve their quality of life.
