Pheu Thai Party’s Stance on Section 112 Cases Sparks Political Debate

Bangkok: "Teng" has dismissed recent claims as mere excuses while the Pheu Thai Party has announced its readiness to support individuals facing charges under Section 112. As political discussions intensify, "Wisut" reportedly engaged in behind-the-scenes talks with coalition parties to consider abstaining from a vote on a people's draft proposal. He clarified that the decision wasn't due to a lack of sufficient votes, suggesting multiple voting strategies were available.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the Prachachon Party and head of the opposition in the House of Representatives, expressed that the Pheu Thai Party is committed to addressing the issues faced by youths charged under Section 112. While he refrained from sharing specific strategies, he emphasized the need for effective communication with those impacted by political cases. Mr. Wisut Chainarun, the government whip, previously cited coalition party resolutions and concerns for governmental stability as reasons for not supporting the draft. However, Mr. Nattapong believes that with strong communication from Pheu Thai, negotiations could permit abstention from voting, allowing the draft to progress through the committee stage for further consideration.

Mr. Nattapong further commented on the internal discussions preceding the coalition whips' resolution, urging the Pheu Thai Party to assert its stance as a core party. He argued against the rejection of public drafts and called for individual party autonomy within the coalition government. Highlighting the importance of the people's sector draft, he stressed the need for clarity in Pheu Thai's approach to resolving political prosecutions.

When questioned about transparency in their strategy, Mr. Nattapong dismissed suggestions of Pheu Thai's lack of preparation. He attributed the decision to vote against the people's draft primarily to concerns surrounding amnesty under Section 112, a significant societal issue. He criticized Mr. Wisut's rationale as unconvincing and reiterated the potential influence of Pheu Thai's clear positioning on coalition parties.

Addressing speculation regarding former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's Section 112 charges, Mr. Nattapong underscored the Prachachon Party's stance on comprehensive and non-discriminatory amnesty, aiming for genuine reconciliation and societal peace.

The ongoing political discourse reflects the complex dynamics within Thailand's legislative body and the efforts to address legal challenges under Section 112, with the Pheu Thai Party at the forefront of advocating for change.
