Permanent Secretary of Labor Expedites Compensation Measures for Relatives of Building Collapse Victims

Bangkok: Permanent Secretary of Labor expedites compensation measures for relatives and those affected by the collapse of a building structure in the Chatuchak area, and confirms that compensation will be provided equally to all workers of all nationalities.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Boonsong Thapchaiyut, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labor, visited the command center and waiting point for relatives affected by the collapse of the Office of the Auditor General's building structure on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road in Chatuchak District last week. His visit was aimed at encouraging Ministry of Labor officials who provided assistance to both Thai and foreign individuals affected by the collapse, as well as those stranded. Mr. Thapchaiyut assured that the Ministry is prepared to offer the same level of assistance to foreign workers in Thailand as it does to Thai nationals.

The Ministry has outlined a process where relatives can file a petition to receive compensation, which will be approved within 15 days, irrespective of social security system membership. The initial compensation is estimated to be between 1-2 million baht. For those in the social security system, employers are expected to assume responsibility. Additionally, the Ministry, through the Social Security Office and the Compensation Fund, will cover medical expenses for the injured until full recovery.

A meeting held last week focused on providing assistance to those injured and deceased. For individuals unemployed due to the earthquake, the Ministry will offer unemployment benefits of 7,500 baht per month for six months. Those not registered will be considered for compensation outside the formal fund. Efforts are underway to ascertain the number of employees present during the incident, with an expected report by 7-8 April.

Earlier, Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Minister of Labor, convened a meeting with over 50 contractors across Bangkok to devise five safety measures for workers. These measures are set to be announced following a conclusive discussion on 8 April.
