People’s Party Dismisses Pheu Thai’s Refusal to Join Opposition Whip

Bang phlat: The People's Party is gearing up to leverage the government policy announcement stage to scrutinize the Anutin Cabinet, which is embroiled in a case with the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). The party has chosen to disregard Pheu Thai's declaration of not joining the opposition whip, emphasizing their intent to collaborate rather than oppose each other. They assert that there is no necessity to discuss this decision with Pheu Thai beforehand, citing their seniority.

According to Thai News Agency, Natthaphong Ruangpanyawut, a party-list MP and leader of the Prachachon Party, addressed the issue concerning Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's Cabinet, which was found guilty of corruption by the NACC. Natthaphong stated that relevant information would be presented during the policy statement to Parliament. The Prachachon Party has prepared debaters who will evaluate each minister's qualifications and the appropriateness of government policy execution over four months. Additionally, they plan to review the government's work plans in line with the MoA and have structured a debate framework.

Natthaphong discussed the division of debate content between the People's Party and Pheu Thai Party, which has declared itself an independent opposition entity. Despite not joining the opposition whip, Natthaphong noted that each party could function independently in their opposition roles without causing parliamentary issues. Internal whips will discuss time allocation to prevent content overlap, ensuring each party maintains its independence.

Regarding Pheu Thai's status, Natthaphong clarified that legally, they remain part of the government due to holding the Deputy Speaker position, but he urged them to act fully as an opposition party. He emphasized that no obstacles should impede the opposition's efforts to guide the Bhumjaithai government per the MOA framework.

Natthaphong stated there is ongoing discussion and coordination with Pheu Thai, aiming for a united opposition front. He stressed the importance of both parties performing their parliamentary duties without internal conflict. Natthaphong expressed that moving forward positively is crucial, especially if constitutional amendments are pursued.

When questioned about an image of Mr. Anutin dining with former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, Natthaphong remarked that such interactions are typical and declined to speculate on the photo's implications. He urged a focus on maintaining strong opposition roles to prevent a majority government scenario.

Natthaphong also addressed concerns about the Anutin Cabinet, noting public apprehension and asserting that the policy statement will mark a new oversight phase.
