Palang Pracharath Party Opposes Tap Lamu Naval Base Use in US Tariff Talks

Phang nga: Phang Nga MPs from the Palang Pracharath Party oppose the government's use of the Tap Lamu naval base as a condition for US tariff negotiations, fearing it will affect tourism and fisheries in the area. They told the government not to be secretive and to speed up negotiations, fearing that exports will not compete with neighboring countries.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chakaj Pattanakitwibul, MP for Phang Nga, Palang Pracharath Party, announced his stance on the conditions for giving the Tap Lamu Port in Phang Nga Province to the United States to use as a naval base in order to reduce import taxes from the United States. He said that he was concerned that Thailand would have to pay a 36% tax from the United States, which would affect the Thai economy because it is a major trading partner of the United States. Therefore, he called on the government to quickly start negotiations, and the Palang Pracharath Party would follow up and oppose exchanging national security for trade negotiations because it would affect the daily lives of the people in the province, as well as tourism and fishing activities of the local people.

Mr. Chakaj also called on the government not to act secretly and to be clear and disclose to the public because otherwise it will affect the whole country, especially the economic problem if Thailand has to pay 16-17% more tax than neighboring countries.
