Bangkok: Paethongtarn is preparing to announce her resignation as leader of the Pheu Thai Party, calling a meeting of MPs and the executive committee to inform them on October 22.
According to Thai News Agency, former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, as leader of the Pheu Thai Party, will convene a meeting of MPs at the party headquarters at 8:30 a.m. to announce her resignation. Following this, she will meet with the party's executive committee at 9:30 a.m. to facilitate the election of a new leader. A special meeting will be scheduled to elect the new party leader and executive committee.
Reporters have noted that Ms. Paethongtarn's decision to resign follows the Constitutional Court's ruling on August 29, 2015, which dismissed her from the position of Prime Minister due to her lack of qualifications and a breach of ethical standards. Although party regulations do not require it, the party leader must certify candidates for MP elections. This could lead to complaints being filed against candidates, preventing them from running. The resignation is a precautionary step to avoid any potential negative impacts or damage to the party in the future.
