Opposition to Submit Urgent Motion on Trump Tax Issue Amid Economic Concerns

Bangkok: The opposition is poised to submit an urgent motion on July 31st to address the pressing Trump tax issue, shifting focus from a previously planned debate under Section 152.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pakornwut Udompipatsakul, an MP for the Prachachon Party and Chief Whip of the Opposition Party, stated that discussions with the Bhumjaithai Party led to this strategic change. The urgency of the US tax negotiations, which carry significant economic implications, prompted the decision. The mechanism under Section 152 was deemed too time-consuming, potentially delaying action by at least a month.

With the 36% tax measure deadline set for August 1st, Mr. Pakornwut emphasized the need for immediate attention, regardless of whether official negotiations conclude by July 31st. He noted that the government must address the impending issues, highlighting the necessity for coordination with involved ministers to provide explanations and insights.

Mr. Pakornwut identified Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, as the primary official responsible for this matter. He indicated that other ministries, such as Commerce, Foreign Affairs, and Agriculture and Cooperatives, must also prepare for potential economic impacts. He urged relevant ministers to engage in the discussions.

Additionally, Mr. Pakornwut mentioned that the opposition party plans to offer solutions, given their team's close monitoring of the issue. They aim to address Thailand's tax discrepancies with neighboring countries and prepare for potential price wars that could arise. He stressed the importance of a comprehensive strategy to navigate the situation.

Mr. Pakornwut reiterated that while Section 152 should address all dimensions of government issues, the current focus is on economic concerns, specifically the US tax situation. He highlighted the need for a broader approach that includes social and political problems within the country, which was discussed and agreed upon with the Bhumjaithai Party.
