Bangkok: The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) has issued a warning about high tides expected from July 23-28, raising concerns over potential flooding in areas along the Chao Phraya River and the Mae Klong River. The warning, Announcement No. 13/2568, highlights the risk of water levels exceeding critical points during the evening hours, particularly between 20.00-23.00 hrs.
According to Thai News Agency, the ONWR has specifically alerted the provinces of Samut Prakan, Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom, and Samut Songkhram of the potential for overflow or flooding. The water level at Phra Chulachomklao Fort and nearby areas is expected to rise to 1.70-2.00 meters above mean sea level, surpassing the critical water level by approximately 0.30 meters. This situation poses a significant risk to low-lying areas, especially those without permanent flood barriers.
The announcement attributes the rising water levels to data from the Hydrographic Department and the influence of a strong southwest monsoon over Thailand. This meteorological activity is expected to bring heavy rain to certain areas, further elevating the water levels in main rivers. The combination of river water and seawater could lead to overflowing riverbanks, particularly affecting the provinces mentioned.
The ONWR has urged relevant agencies to take proactive measures in response to the potential flooding. These measures include closely monitoring the water situation, checking the stability of water defense lines, reinforcing embankments at risk points, and informing the public in advance, especially those in areas outside the embankment or gaps.
Additionally, the ONWR advises preparing machinery and equipment to support timely assistance and alleviate the impact on affected populations. Agencies are also encouraged to adjust water management plans in reservoirs, dams, and floodgates according to the rising sea levels to prevent adverse effects on low-lying areas.
The ONWR will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to monitor the situation and urges the public to stay informed through government updates. Residents in risk areas are advised to be prepared for possible evacuation orders or additional warnings.
