Bangkok: The Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) has reported a significant surge in online complaints in Thailand, with 27,000 cases recorded in the first eight months of 2025.
According to Thai News Agency, these complaints have primarily centered around online products and illegal websites. Over 98% of these cases have been resolved, as the ETDA collaborates with the Department of Special Investigation (DPS) to combat fraudulent activities and enhance public awareness of online threats.
Dr. Chaichana Mitpan, Director of ETDA, disclosed that data from the Online Help and Resolution Center (1212 ETDA) showed a total of 27,332 online complaints from January to August 2025. The most frequent issues included online shopping, which accounted for 10,306 complaints or 41.79%, followed by illegal websites with 9,090 complaints or 36.87%. Other complaints involved documentation for reporting issues, unfair business practices, and more.
Though there was a decline in complaints over the past two years, with 45,181 cases in 2023 and 35,358 in 2024, the first eight months of 2025 saw an increase of 4,574 complaints compared to 2024, marking a 20.10 percent rise. This increase highlights ongoing challenges consumers face amidst growing online transactions. Scammers have developed new methods of deception, such as using AI Deepfake technology to impersonate officials, contributing to the complexity of online threats. Noteworthy scams this year include online trading scams, counterfeit products, and online investment schemes.
As the regulatory body for digital service businesses, 1212 ETDA plays a vital role in resolving online threats. It coordinates with various partners, including the Royal Thai Police and digital platforms like Facebook and TikTok, to enhance user protection. Between January and August 2025, the service resolved 26,794 complaints, achieving a 98.03% resolution rate and a 95.14% user satisfaction rate.
Efforts are underway to improve online transaction safety for Thais. ETDA is working with regulatory, government, and private sector agencies to implement regulatory mechanisms. This includes guidelines for user registration, online advertising oversight, and standards for selling products. A campaign named "DPS Trust Every Click" is being launched to raise awareness and foster collaboration for a secure digital ecosystem.
