OECD Meeting Kicks Off with Thailand Optimistic About Membership

Paris: The opening ceremony of the OECD meeting commenced with high hopes from the Thai delegation. The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed confidence that Thailand will receive favorable feedback from member states, aspiring to elevate the nation to developed country status. This development is expected to create opportunities for Thailand and allow it to play a role in shaping global rules and regulations.

According to Thai News Agency, at 1:00 p.m. local time in Paris, France, Mr. Marist Sangiampong, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, commented post-ceremony on Thailand's invitation to the OECD Ministerial Council meeting. Thailand, on the verge of becoming an OECD member, has been positively received by many developed countries, particularly those in emerging markets. This acceptance highlights Thailand's significant role in advocating for increased membership of developing countries in the OECD. Additionally, Thailand is set to be a leading nation within ASEAN, fostering connections between ASEAN and the OECD.

The executives of the OECD, along with the Secretary-General, underscored the importance of connectivity between ASEAN countries and the OECD, with Thailand and Indonesia applying for membership. This step will be crucial for Thailand in setting standards and guidelines for developing countries and uniting them with developed nations. The move aims to elevate Thailand to the level of developed countries fully.

When questioned about the aspirations of Thai citizens for their country to achieve developed nation status, Mr. Marist affirmed this sentiment. He emphasized that joining the OECD would provide Thailand with learning opportunities and the chance to collaboratively establish global rules and regulations with developed countries.
