NCPO and Student Network Urge Attorney General to Appeal Thaksin Case

Bangkok: The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has formally submitted a letter to the Attorney General, urging an appeal in the Section 112 case against Thaksin Shinawatra. This move emphasizes the importance of pursuing the case to its fullest extent as it involves an institution held in high regard by the public.

According to Thai News Agency, the Network of Students and People for Thailand Reform also submitted a similar request to the Attorney General. They are advocating for an appeal against the charges brought under Section 112 of the Criminal Code after the lower court dismissed the case on August 22. The network, under the banner of the Student and People's Network for Thailand Reform (SNRN), is calling for meticulous consideration of the appeal.

Mr. Phichit Chaiyamongkol, a leading figure in the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), highlighted a critical aspect of the lower court's verdict. He noted that the case was dismissed partly due to the prosecutor's inability to verify the source of a clip, which has raised concerns among academics about whether the prosecutor adequately fulfilled their role as the plaintiff. The case's connection to the monarchy and its public significance further complicates matters, making today's petition for an appeal crucial.

Mr. Sakkasem Nitraiyok, Inspector-General of the Attorney General and spokesperson for the Office of the Attorney General, disclosed that prosecutors have requested to extend the deadline for appeal consideration to October 22. The documents received today will be reviewed by the Attorney General to decide on proceeding with an appeal.
