Bangkok: The NBTC Chairman spearheads an initiative to modernize Thai telecommunications by integrating AI systems, enhancing opportunities for mobile operators, and transforming various economic sectors. Confident in Thailand's leadership in AI, the initiative aims to attract large companies and establish a network infrastructure surpassing 5G, promoting fair competition and consumer safety. According to Thai News Agency, Clinical Professor Dr. Saran Boonbaichaipruk, Chairman of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), delivered a speech at the event 'THAILAND 2025: Opportunity Hope Reality', discussing "AI: New opportunities". He emphasized the NBTC's commitment to promoting and overseeing AI across all dimensions, ensuring that even remote areas have access to advanced technology and digital skill development through telecommunications. Dr. Saran highlighted that AI technology is already an integral part of daily life, integrated through IoT, smart devices, and mobile phones. T hese technologies collect data on human behavior for processing and analysis, presenting insights back to users. He acknowledged the potential of AI to revolutionize technology, tackling challenges beyond human capabilities, while also addressing ethical concerns and technological safety. Beyond regulation, the NBTC's role includes promoting AI accessibility through telecommunications systems, even in remote regions. The goal is to leverage AI across all sectors, including public health, finance, transportation, production, and communications. Dr. Saran stressed the importance of international cooperation to enhance infrastructure, allocate frequencies, and boost communication efficiency. With over 100 million mobile phone users in Thailand, 4G and 5G network usage is at 99.15% and 91.00%, respectively. By 2029, mobile broadband demand is predicted to reach 1,156 GB per person annually. Smart 5G will be pivotal in sectors such as agriculture, urban management, mass transit, and education. The NBTC plans to expand the 5G network to provide high-speed internet universally and modernize USO centers to meet public health and medical needs. Moreover, the NBTC seeks to promote fair competition and innovation by establishing Regulatory Sandboxes. These allow telecom operators to experiment with AI for predictive maintenance, network efficiency improvements, and data-driven services, fostering a robust AI ecosystem. Dr. Saran concluded by emphasizing the NBTC's responsibility to uphold safety standards, ensure fair competition, and collaborate with the private sector.
