Nantana Nantawaropas Calls for Democratic Constitution and Warns Against Misleading Referendum Tactics

Bangkok: "Nantana" revives the spirits of the October 14 heroes, warding off evil spirits, the demonic descendants, and the remnants of dictatorship from the drafting of the constitution. She warns that questions that are lies, hidden agendas, and misleading statements should not be used in a referendum. According to Thai News Agency, during the joint parliamentary meeting to consider the draft amendment to the constitution proposed by three political parties, chaired by Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, President of the National Assembly, Ms. Nanthana Nantawaropas, a member of the Senate, discussed supporting the drafts from the Pheu Thai Party and the Prachachon Party. She stated that 50 years ago, on October 14, 1973, brave heroes came out to fight against dictatorship and demand a democratic constitution. She paid tribute to these heroes, noting that the struggle for a constitution drafted by the people continues. Ms. Nantana emphasized that the current draft is not the version that should be accepted, as it is filled with hidden agendas and tactics undermining the people's sovereignty. If the spirits of the October 14th heroes still linger over democracy, she urged them to exorcise the evil spirits and remnants of dictatorship from the current draft of the people's constitution. She further highlighted the importance of adhering to the principle of democracy belonging to the people, advocating for drafts from the People's Party and the Pheu Thai Party. These drafts allow for the selection of the Constituent Assembly by the people, with the government making the final selection. Ms. Nantana criticized the Bhumjaithai Party's draft for its lack of public participation, asserting that it is largely controlled by parliamentary games. She pointed out that a significant portion of the Senate is involved in unethical practices, potentially leading to a biased Constituent Assembly and constitution. Additionally, Ms. Nantana stressed the importance of clear and straightforward referendum questions to avoid voter confu sion and manipulation, citing the 2016 referendum as an example of misleading practices. She called for sincere efforts from the government to push for a free and fair referendum, ensuring that the new constitution is democratic and empowers the people.
