Bangkok: The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has turned down a petition submitted by Paetongtarn Shinawatra, which sought the appointment of Phichit Chuenban to a political role.
According to Thai News Agency, the complaint, filed by Paetongtarn Shinawatra, alleged a breach of ethical standards in the process of appointing Phichit Chuenban as leader of the Pheu Thai Party and in the selection of individuals for political roles. Mr. Surapong Intarathaworn, Deputy Secretary-General of the NACC and acting spokesperson, explained that the commission received the petition from the Election Commission (EC) for review in line with its responsibilities.
The petition raised concerns about Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra's previous actions as the leader of the Pheu Thai Party, particularly her decision to approve or disapprove Mr. Phichit Chuenban's political appointment. Mr. Chuenban had previously faced charges by the Supreme Court for legal violations, dishonest conduct, and breaching ethical standards.
The NACC's investigation concluded that these actions by Ms. Paetongtarn occurred before her tenure as Prime Minister, thus exempting her from allegations of ethical misconduct while in political office. Citing the 2018 Constitutional Act on Prevention and Suppression of Corruption, Section 28 (1), the commission resolved not to pursue the accusation further.
