Monporn Confident in Passing Electric Train Fare Legislation

Bangkok: "Monporn" believes the three draft laws for the 20 baht electric train will pass the parliament. Monporn Charoensri, Deputy Minister of Transport, expressed confidence in the passage of three draft laws concerning the 20-baht flat-rate electric train fare. She emphasized that, following discussions with the Senate, the financial legislation would be paused for only 15 days if the Senate disagrees.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Manoporn addressed the progress on the flat-rate electric train project, which includes the Rail Transport Act, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand Act, and the Common Ticket Act. She conveyed no concern over Senate approval, citing a recent meeting where the Senate acknowledged the significance of these policies and agreed to quicken their review. The Ministry of Transport plans to expedite the draft Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand Act and the Common Ticket Act, aiming for Senate submission on August 1st. Of the 165 sections in the Rail Transport Act, only 43 require amendments, having been thoroughly reviewed.

Ms. Manoporn responded to criticism comparing the bill to the digital wallet project by emphasizing the government's dedication to this initiative as a national flagship project. She assured that the project would launch within the year, benefiting citizens across the country.

Addressing concerns about the government's narrow majority affecting the bill's progress, Ms. Manoporn noted the shared commitment between government and opposition, with opposition members already voting in favor. She indicated that any emerging issues would be resolved through discussions at the Ministry of Transport.

Ms. Manoporn clarified that unlike the referendum bill, which requires a six-month waiting period if opposed by senators, this financial bill could secure approval within 15 days. She emphasized the swift advancement of the legislation through the bicameral process.
