Minister of Public Health Urges Calm Amid New COVID-19 Outbreak in Thailand

Bangkok: The Minister of Public Health, Somsak Thepsuthin, has called for calm among the public amidst the resurgence of a severe COVID-19 outbreak, emphasizing that the virus has now become an endemic disease. The Minister noted that while the virus remains highly transmissible, the symptoms are generally mild, and the number of new infections has started to decline. He urged the public to adhere strictly to public health measures, especially wearing masks if at risk.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Somsak outlined the COVID-19 situation from January 1, 2025, to the present, reporting a total of 53,676 cases with 16 fatalities. Bangkok recorded the highest number of cases at 16,723, with infections peaking in the 18th week (April 27 to May 3, 2025) at 14,349 cases and 2 deaths. The highest number of infections during this period was in Bangkok, followed by Chonburi, Nonthaburi, and Rayong. However, in the 19th week (May 4 to May 10, 2025), new infections decreased to 12,543, indicating a downward trend.

Mr. Somsak highlighted that epidemiological surveillance data shows that the spread of COVID-19 is linked to large gatherings and seasonal factors, particularly during the rainy season. He stressed that COVID-19, now an endemic disease, can be found year-round and urged the public not to panic but to remain vigilant and adhere to health recommendations.

He outlined steps to take if COVID-19 is suspected: testing with ATK if symptoms arise, wearing masks if positive, and avoiding public gatherings. He advised those with severe symptoms to seek medical attention immediately and recommended avoiding close contact with high-risk groups, or wearing a mask if contact is unavoidable.
