Minister of Culture Oversees Construction and Restoration for Royal Cremation Ceremony

Bangkok: The Minister of Culture inspected and assigned the Fine Arts Department the task of constructing the Royal Crematorium and its accompanying structures, alongside the restoration of the Royal Chariot and Phra Yannamas, in preparation for the Royal Cremation Ceremony of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sabida Thaiset, Minister of Culture, disclosed that the Ministry of Culture, through the Fine Arts Department, has been entrusted by the Cabinet with the significant task of managing the ceremony and construction of the Royal Crematorium. A meeting was convened to discuss the operational guidelines for the Fine Arts Department, ensuring adherence to ancient royal traditions and elegance befitting Her Majesty. The Ministry will seek royal approval from its advisory bodies and perform its duties following government directives.

Ms. Sabida further mentioned her visit to follow up on the survey progress of the Royal Chariot and Phraya Namas, ensuring their readiness for the Royal Cremation Ceremony. The government and Cabinet have tasked the Ministry of Culture with overseeing the design and construction of the Royal Crematorium. The Fine Arts Department has drafted a design awaiting approval from the Royal Advisory Council and will advance the process with regular meetings and progress reports. Personnel preparedness and cooperation are emphasized to ensure the highest level of royal honor.

Mr. Phanombutr Chanthachote, Director-General of the Fine Arts Department, stated that preparations align with government policy and the Minister's directives. The project is ready to implement its tasks, including designing the Royal Crematorium, with drafts being prepared for advisory body review. The process, from drafting to construction completion, is expected to take no more than one year and includes cost assessment and government funding proposals.

The Director-General highlighted the project's adherence to ancient royal traditions, serving as a tribute to Her Majesty. Modern technology aids in constructing buildings like the Phra Thinang Songtham and Sala Luk Khun, based on original data. The team includes architects and craftspeople who served King Rama IX, ensuring dedication and loyalty in honoring Her Majesty.

The Fine Arts Department has allocated tasks to its agencies: architecture for the Royal Crematorium, restoration of the Royal Chariot and antiques by the National Museum, creation of accessories by the Bureau of the Ten Craftsmen, music by the Office of Music, and documentation by the National Archives of Thailand.

Ms. Sabida also observed the survey and inspection of royal carriages at the National Museum, Bangkok, for their conservation and beautification. The initial step involves surveying their condition to plan restoration according to traditional Thai art, aiming for completion within one year. An auspicious date will be chosen for the ceremony to consecrate the restored carriages and regalia, adhering to traditional customs.
