Bangkok: Minister Jiraporn Sindhuphrai, head of the Consumer Protection Board, has emphasized the urgent need to restore the board's image and public trust following recent controversies involving The Icon Group. The minister has tasked the Anti-Corruption Commission with reviewing laws to prevent fraudulent businesses and pyramid schemes. According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Jiraporn, who serves as the Minister to the Prime Minister's Office, chaired the 6/2024 Consumer Protection Board meeting at Building 1, Government House. In her address before the meeting, she acknowledged the reputational damage suffered by the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) due to allegations from The Icon Group Company Limited. She stressed the importance of rebuilding the OCPB's stature as a reliable government entity for consumers. To address these challenges, an external investigation committee has been established to delve into the issues, alongside a subcommittee tasked with investigating specific incidents, such as an audio clip case. These bodies are expected to provide recommendations for long-term solutions, including reviewing legal constraints and operational practices. The minister invited input from various stakeholders, including qualified and experienced individuals, to propose improvements for the OCPB's future operations. The minister further stated that the National Administration Commission, under the National Strategy Reform and Reconciliation framework, has been directed to study relevant laws to combat fraudulent business practices and pyramid schemes. This initiative aims to enhance legal oversight and prevention efforts, in collaboration with the Consumer Protection Board. The minister called for collective efforts to rebuild public confidence and trust in the Consumer Protection Board's integrity and efficiency.
