Medical Council Meeting to Decide Fate of Doctors Involved in Thaksin’s Treatment

Bangkok: Waiting for the Medical Council's decision today on the punishment of 3 doctors in the 14th floor case. According to Thai News Agency, the Medical Council members have been gradually entering the meeting room since this morning. The Medical Council Executive Committee meeting is held every second Thursday of the month. Today, the agenda that society is keeping a close eye on is the consideration of the resolution to punish three doctors from the Prison Hospital and the Police General Hospital who treated Thaksin Shinawatra on the 14th floor after Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin vetoed the resolution to punish the three doctors in the previous meeting. Today, it was reported that Somsak will explain to the meeting at 12:00 noon. He will have 15 minutes to explain before leaving the meeting immediately because it is a secret meeting.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Prasobsri Uengthaworn, one of the elected members of the Medical Council, provided information before the meeting that Mr. Somsak Thepsuthin, Minister of Public Health, in his capacity as the Special President of the Medical Council, would attend the meeting, which is not unusual because he has attended meetings before, and this is not the first time.

For the voting process of the Medical Council today, there are 70 members, divided into 35 members by position and 35 members who are elected, consisting of 4 representatives from agencies under the Ministry of Public Health, namely the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, the Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, the Director-General of the Department of Health, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Boromarajonani College of Nursing, 4 representatives from the Ministry of Defense, 1 Surgeon-General of the Royal Thai Police, and 26 Deans of the Faculty of Medicine from higher education institutions nationwide. However, in this case, one of the accused is also a member of the committee, reducing the number of eligible voters to 69.

Voting: If the original resolution to press charges against the three doctors is to be upheld, no less than 47 votes must be cast. If any committee member has a stake in the agenda, they must abstain or leave the meeting room.
