Chonburi: Khao Kheow Open Zoo officials conducted a rehearsal for handling escaped animals using 'hippo' mascot costumes, aiming to boost tourists' confidence. On July 21, 2025, at 1:35 p.m., the zoo organized a drill to test their escape response plan, focusing on efficient coordination between departments in case an animal escapes from its exhibit.
According to Thai News Agency, the rehearsal involved veterinarians and animal care staff simulating a scenario where a 'bouncy hippo' escaped. Staff members wore hippo mascot costumes to enhance realism. After the escape was reported through the chain of command, the control team acted quickly to seal off the area and safely guide the hippo back to its enclosure.
During the exercise, a hippo attacked a staff member, resulting in minor injuries. The zoo's first aid unit provided immediate assistance, and the hippo was sent to the hospital. The veterinary team used anesthesia to manage the situation and performed a health check before returning the hippo to its exhibit.
Mr. Narongwit Chodchoi, Director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, stated that the rehearsal is part of the fiscal year 2025 safety measures. The aim is to prevent injuries or loss of life and ensure the safety of animal care staff and tourists visiting the zoo.
