“Jurind” Warns Government of Potential US Tariff Hike Impact on Thai Exports

Bangkok: "Jurind" warns the government not to be complacent. Mr. Jurin Laksanawisit, Democrat Party-list MP, discussed in the House of Representatives about the announcement of the United States signing an executive order to set retaliatory tariffs and stated that this action is to set import tariffs to the United States from trading partners to be equal to those charged by trading partners from the United States and to be fair to the United States, including reducing the deficit of the United States. In addition, it was stated that additional measures may be added if the measures that have been issued are not effective. If any trading partner takes retaliatory measures against the United States, consideration may be given to increasing or expanding the scope of tax collection. However, if any country agrees to make amends and provide relief to the United States, consideration may be given to reducing or limiting the scope of tax collection.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jurin added that if this announcement is compared to an earthquake, if there is a response, it may become an aftershock. And don't think that it will end here. There may be more to come. Therefore, the government must not be complacent because the US market is an important export market for Thailand, especially rice, tires, and raw materials for producing animal feed, which will affect farmers, who are the majority of our country. And Thailand's rice exports will have to compete with Vietnam because when the tax is added, the price of our rice will be almost twice as expensive, which will be the third sword that will affect farmers.

Mr. Jurin emphasized that the government must accelerate the process in the right direction, especially since the government has firmly announced that it will not take the farmer income insurance measure, and raised the question of how it will help exporters and farmers. It also needs to prepare measures for rubber products because the purchase and sale must be agreed upon in advance. However, if the day comes when the tax is adjusted, will the contract be canceled? There is also news that the government will negotiate by importing corn from the United States, which has already low domestic corn prices, so the impact must be taken care of.
