Bangkok: "Jiraporn" orders the Consumer Protection Board to raise consumer protection standards on a large scale. Ms. Jiraporn Sindhuphrai, Minister to the Prime Minister's Office, has tasked the Office of the Consumer Protection Board with revising existing consumer protection laws. This initiative aims to address the limitations of the current Consumer Protection Act of 1979 and the Direct Sales and Direct Marketing Act of 2002, which are deemed inadequate amidst rapid technological advancements and evolving economic and social conditions.
According to Thai News Agency, the Consumer Protection Board has resolved to establish a subcommittee to study and draft a new Consumer Protection Act. This body will analyze existing challenges, gather input from various stakeholders, and draft provisions that align with contemporary economic and societal needs. The move is expected to make consumer protection more robust and comprehensive.
On June 4, 2025, the formation of this subcommittee was approved, marking the beginning of an extensive review process. By June 6, 2025, the Consumer Protection Board had already initiated a project to assess the effectiveness of the existing Consumer Protection Act by engaging with stakeholders in an open forum to gather opinions and suggestions. Similarly, a forum was organized on June 18, 2025, to discuss amendments to the Direct Sales and Direct Marketing Act, ensuring the laws adapt to the changing business environment.
Ms. Jiraporn emphasized the significance of this legislative overhaul, stating that it will not only reform the laws but also enhance the operational mechanisms of the Consumer Protection Board. The anticipated amendments are expected to make consumer assistance more efficient and ensure appropriate penalties for violations, reflecting the current trading conditions and marketing mechanisms.
