Jatuporn Highlights Need for Careful Consideration in US Corn Import to Protect Thai Farmers

Bangkok: Jatuporn revealed that importing corn from the United States requires careful consideration to protect Thai farmers. He also stated that he is expediting a solution to the Thai-Cambodian border dispute, which has caused exports to plummet by 400-500 million baht per day.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chatuporn Buruspat, Minister of Commerce, addressed the progress of negotiations on corn imports from the United States, stating that they are still being carefully considered to prevent impacts on domestic farmers. He confirmed that the 19% import tariff reflects fair competition. He added that corn imports from neighboring countries, particularly areas where burning is practiced to prepare for crop planting, require further discussion, as they are linked to environmental issues and PM2.5 levels, which impact public health.

Regarding Thai-Cambodian border trade, which has been impacted by an average of 400-500 million baht in exports per day, the Ministry of Commerce is expediting solutions, including adjusting distribution routes, finding new markets, and assisting entrepreneurs with low-interest loans. The government emphasizes that it will take into account national sovereignty while protecting entrepreneurs' interests.

To prepare for the upcoming US trade measures, the Ministry of Commerce is preparing to open a "One Stop Service Center" at the Export Center on Ratchadaphisek Road next week to provide consultation and information to businesses, mitigate impacts, and build confidence in their continued operations.
