Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Forecasted for Northern Thailand

Bangkok: The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rain in certain areas of northern Thailand, with a 70% chance of thunderstorms expected in the North and Northeast regions. The forecast predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas.

According to Thai News Agency, the department's 24-hour weather forecast indicates that parts of upper Thailand will continue to experience heavy rain. Specific areas in the North and Northeast are likely to face heavy to very heavy rainfall. Residents in these regions should be cautious of potential hazards such as flash floods, forest runoff, and mudslides, particularly on hillsides near waterways and lowlands. Farmers are advised to enhance their drainage systems to mitigate possible damage to crops and livestock. This weather pattern is attributed to the monsoon trough moving across upper North Thailand and upper Laos into a low-pressure cell on the coast of upper Vietnam, combined with the moderate southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, the South, and the Gulf of Thailand.

The forecast also highlights moderate wave conditions in the upper Andaman Sea, with waves reaching about 2 meters in height, while the lower Andaman Sea experiences waves of 1-2 meters. Thunderstorm areas will see waves exceeding 2 meters. Mariners in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are advised to exercise caution and avoid navigating through thunderstorm-prone regions. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea are recommended to stay ashore during this period.

Additionally, the low-pressure area along the coast of India is expected to weaken. The regional weather forecast for May 30, 2025, includes thunderstorms in 70% of Bangkok and surrounding areas, with heavy rain anticipated in some places. Northeastern areas such as Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, and Udon Thani are also expected to experience heavy to very heavy rain. The central region will see thunderstorms in 60% of the area, while the eastern region could face heavy rainfall in key provinces like Nakhon Nayok and Rayong. The southern regions will also experience varying degrees of thunderstorms and rain.
